Can I use an extension cord with a welder?

It is generally not recommended to use an extension cord with a welder. Welding machines draw a lot of power and can be dangerous if used with an extension cord that is not designed to handle the high demand for electricity.

Using an extension cord with a welder can cause the cord to overheat, potentially leading to a fire. Additionally, the voltage drop that occurs over the length of the extension cord can affect the performance of the welder, resulting in poor welds.

If you need to use your welder at a location that is not near an electrical outlet, it is best to have a licensed electrician install a dedicated circuit for the welder. This will ensure that the welder has a reliable power source and that you can use it safely.
